REVIEW

I was hired to direct ARMS AND THE MAN for Boomerang Theatre Company the summer of 1999 and had the pleasure of mounting in it the charming jewel box Theatre 22 in NYC which sadly no longer exists. One of George Bernard Shaw's more rarely performed works, the play takes place during the Serbo/Bulgarian war of 1885 and focuses on a soldier who has no desire to be a soldier, a family that longs for greater status, a maid who seduced a soldier, and a young girl named Raina torn between her war hero suitor and the charming chocolate loving Captain Bluntschli. Often called Shaw's wittiest play, I enjoyed researching the era, and playing with the levels of status, and what it means to be a solider.

I designed the sets which mainly consisted of hanging items: pink satin curtains in Raina's room, shelves, artwork and a cherry blossom branch. Cast member Diane Tack Zumbro helped me design the costumes which were a combination of rental pieces, thrift store converts and in the case of Dianne's lovely costume - a full build. Sadly not great photos - a few in black and white and backstage photos of the cast. No good photos of the set - which I think was quite effective from both a budget and aesthetic standpoint.
